Big Bend National Park is a national park located in the U.S. state of Texas. Big Bend has national significance as the largest protected area of Chihuahuan Desert topography and ecology in the United States. This trip report chronicles a trip though the Chicos Mountains that over look the Rio Grande River and Mexico to the South. This Hiking Journal is of a hiking trip I did in 2008. |

Two day trip into the Ouachita National Forest . We started at the Albert Pike Recreation Area Trail Head. I was only able to map the first day of the trip, and a little of the second day due to an issue with my GPS. We took county road 82 back to the Albert Pike trail head. |
There is a small National Forest campground at the trail head. An 8.7-mile (14 km) hike beginning at 9,000 feet (2,743 m) above sea level which is relatively level the first 7 miles (11.3 km) becomes very steep the last mile (1.6 km) and ascends to Jackass Pass at 10,800 feet (3,290 m), crossing the continental divide. From there one must descend a steep half mile (800 m) to Lonesome Lake, which is one of four lakes in the cirque.
